You might be thinking, huh? I’ve never heard of Round Top, Texas. Well in ordinary circumstances you probably wouldn’t. The town has a population of 90 that swells to a size of up to 150,000 over the course of the three-week antiques show. So, in some circles it is very well-known. In fact, if you’ve watched Fixer Upper, you may remember that Chip and Jo visited Round Top on a couple of occasions. Round Top is some of the best shopping you can have. You absolutely need to plan a visit to Round Top, and I am going to tell you why you don’t want to miss it.
First of all, the Antiques Show happens twice a year. Once in October and once in April. It is called an Antiques Show, but it has so much more than that. This event stretches through several towns including Round Top, Warrenton, and Carmne in the picturesque land between Austin and Houston. The scenery is great and the weather is usually lovely as well. Although, it IS Texas so the weather is always a crap shoot. And, the people watching is even better.
So, what can you find in Round Top? You name it, you can buy it. Of course there are antiques of all kinds and age. From serious (what I would consider) crap to beautiful finds worth thousands of dollars. However, in addition to antiques you can find all kinds of home decor items ~ both new and used. You will find jewelry ~ costume and the real deal. You will find all kinds of trendy clothing, and every crafty, homemade thing you can think of. I go every year in search of stuff for my house. I always come home with that plus a few other items. Truly, there is something for everyone. And believe me, you will wonder about who wants some of the stuff that’s there. But, that’s the beauty of it.
I recommend going for a weekend. We usually drive down early Friday and get a good 1/2 day of shopping in before people start packing p their tents and booths for the day. At the end of day 1, we drive about 30-45 minutes to our hotel and crash for the night. We head back early Saturday and shop ALL day. We usually end the day in Round Top on the square. There is a couple of cute restaurants and one generally has live music on a patio. It’s a great way to wind down after a day shopping out in the sun.
Things You Must Know
- There are really no great hotels nearby so you have to be content with staying at a Holiday or Motor Inn or a B&B. Also, you should know, if you want to go, you better book your hotel well in advance. Supply is limited and demand is high for those three weeks.
- Pack well. The weather can change a lot at either of these times of year. You are best dressing in layers so you can pull off if it’s warm or bundle up if it’s chilly. Also, wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking and walking and walking. Moreover, you will mostly be walking out in fields and graveled areas. I think tennies are best, but if it’s wet, pack the rain boots for sure. Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat. You are out in the sun all day.
- Get a cart. Trust me, you want one. Nothing fancy, just a basket on wheels that you can maneuver through the crowds. Without a cart that you can pull, you will be hauling bags around all day. That gets old quick. A cart will hold all your purchases, plus a drink or two. 🙂
- Bring cash. Most vendors will take your credit cards and checks; however, cash is good to have if you want to negotiate the price and make a good deal. Speaking of good deals, the best deals are found at the end of the show when vendors are getting ready to pack their stuff back up. I was able to score an amazing dining table and coffee table on the final day in the final hours. I love a good deal!
So, have I convinced you to schedule your visit? Let me encourage you to go for a weekend if you’re in Texas. You won’t regret it, especially if you’re a bargain hunter, a shopper, or a collector. Have I mentioned that this is the BEST girls weekend? When I saw “we” on this trip, it includes my mom, my sister, and a few friends. The food is okay at best ~ unless you love fair type food. The wine is always good, and time with friends is the best. If you decide to go, make sure to let me know. I’ll be there at the end of the month, and I am counting down the days.
