Lipstick With Staying Power

Lipstick With Staying Power

I am one of those girls who likes to look put together when I go out.  Make no mistake.  I said I LIKE to.  It does not always work out that way.  I am a real girl living in the real world.  I have 3 kids, a house to clean, meals to cook, and endless things on my TO DO list – just like everyone else.  Sometimes pulled together is just not going to happen.  However, I find that if I just put on a little lipstick and mascara I feel MUCH better and don’t look so much like a walking corpse.  Lipstick is one of those products that we can use and look instantly  perked up, right?

It is for that very reason that I have about 87,000 of them in my bathroom drawer and another 1,500 in my bag every day.  Okay, slight exaggeration there.  Let’s just say, I have more than any woman needs.  It seems like I am on an endless quest to find the right shade, the on trend color, and one that STAYS ON.  Is that too much to hope for or expect?  The reality is that I leave my home in the morning with makeup done and lipstick on.  I seldom get a chance to check my face or reapply lipstick during the day.  My days are busy and it seems like the end of the day before I even remember to reapply.  I need a color that will stay where I put it.  Does anyone else feel that way?

So, which brands live up to their hype and stay on?  Well, I have done a little field research if you will, and have some answers and suggestions for you.  Before that, let me just say that, yes, these are my lips.  No, they don’t always look so good.  These pics are not retouched as I wanted you to see an honest result.  Try hard not to judge me.  We can all agree that lipstick has a little magic power. 🙂  And, can I just say, every picture feels like you’re looking up my nose. #sosorry  Moreover, I cannot believe I am actually putting these photos out there….

Okay, so I tried a different brand each day.  I tried to remember to take several photos throughout the day without reapplying.  I usually drink a cup of coffee in the morning from my travel mug.  Depending on the day, I may have to eat at work as well.  Outside of that, I don’t really mess with my lips.  What you see is what you can expect as well with lots of talking and one coffee cup.

Lipstick #1 – Stila – Liquid Lipstick.

This is called “stay all-day” liquid lipstick for a reason.  This is the BEST lipstick I have found for staying power AND it does not feel drying at all.  If you really want to ensure it stays where you put it, combine it with their lip liners.  I once went to a party and had ladies comment that my lipstick was still on after several drinks.  They asked what it was.  It was then that I remembered that I had lined my lips, but had forgotten to go back and apply lipstick over it.   I think that speaks to the quality of these products.  Anyway, the shade I’m wearing here is Bacca and the cost is $24.

10:30 AM – and what is the light source?? No idea. Still, the lipstick is looking good.

2:45 PM – after eating lunch and talking all day. It’s still tinted a bit, but barely. Still, that’s not bad!

Day #2 – Tarte Lipsurgence LipCream

I love these little Tarte “crayons.”  They come in a myriad of shades, they feel great and are moisturizing.  They are also easy to reapply without even looking.  Does anyone else do that?  Anyway, while I love the look and feel, these do not have a tremendous staying power.  These definitely need to be reapplied from time to time.  Still, if you just reapplied mid-day, I think these would work well because as you can see at 10 AM below, I still had a bit of color.  This color (I think) is called Pizazz and I don’t see that in stores anymore; however, they do have new shades for spring that are pretty.

Day #3 – It Cosmetics

I think this is It Cosmetics Blurred Lines Gel Creme lipstick.  I can tell you that I bought this for an easy natural, go with anything kind of color.  It feels great putting it on but does not stay well at all.  In fairness, not all lipsticks are designed to stay all day.  Some they assume you will be reapplying.  This is a great weekend shade for me because I can touch up as needed.  It’s not good for me for all day color but it does feel really nice.  This color is Naturally Pretty and it will run you about $24.

Noonish – and it’s gone. Definitely need to reapply.

Day #4 Revlon Colorstay

Okay, so I thought this was the bomb when I first tried it.  It is inexpensive, is applied with a wand, and comes in tons of colors.  Also, they claim that it stays – at least for a while.  Thus the name.  I’m sorry I don’t have more shots of this one, but you can clearly see it didn’t last me all day.  However, if you line your lips first it does tend to stay a little better.  I don’t know that I did that here.  Another pro for this brand is that it’s not going to break the bank.  You can get several colors and reapply your heart away with no fear of having to restock.  Be aware though, this one is not moisturizing at all and it does tend to make my lips feel dry after a while.  The color I’m wearing is 035 Iconic and costs around $9.

Day #5 – Buxom Lip Stick

I love this brand! I have tried lots of their shades.  I especially love the plumping ones.  The lip polish colors are not going to be as intensely pigmented as the lip creams.  However, I sometimes like a little gloss and these give me a little color and a little shine.  Good compromise.  So, this does not give me the stay all day that I want, but it’s also easy to reapply with the wand.  I’m wearing the shade Las Vegas.  I also love their lip polishes.

11 AM – still a bit of color, not totally gone, but fading for sure
3PM – and it’s gone. I’m left with corpse like lips. 🙁

Okay, so what can we learn from these somewhat embarrassing and unflattering pictures?  Two things actually.  One – lipstick makes a HUGE difference on a woman’s face (I need to remember that and reapply during the day!).  And, two – for my money, Stila is the winner for stay all day color without drying out your lips.

Have you tried any other lipsticks that you think are awesome?  I’d love to get your picks in the comments below.  Also, don’t forget to sign up for my email list here. Now, forget about these pictures and go get yourself some new lipsticks.

Until next time~

  1. Timely! I recently tried a double ended Loreal product that I’m liking. Color wand one one side, clear gloss on the other side.

  2. Have you tried LipSense yet? Let me know when would be a good day to show you my testers!

  3. Try Milani’s Amore Matte Lip Creams! They last longer on me than the Stila Liquid Lipstick, are much more affordable and are much more kiss-proof/coffee mug-proof!
